Project in Practice: “The opportunity to try out your ideas and make it happen - or not!”

Asbjørn Nørlund & Till Daling

Students at the University of Copenhagen have the opportunity to gain ECTS points while doing a Project in Practice in their own idea. Till Daling and Asbjørn Nørlund, both students at Human Nutrition, decided to grab the chance in the spring semester and developed hands-on competences in business development through their engagement in SCIENCE Innovation Hub.

Till Daling and Asbjørn Nørlund agrees that doing a Project in Practice is not an easy solution. It is hard work and you have to be very structured, disciplined and motivated to gain the most out of the process.

“I see the process as I came in with an idea and a hundred questions arose. The entire time new questions arose. I felt like I was supposed to explore them, but at the same time, there was the academic part of the project, that also took up a lot of time and reflection,” Asbjørn explains.

The independent way of studying and creating your own project and curriculum, to help exploring the business idea, was challenging, but also one with great benefits. Till points out:

“It was a great experience for me to be working with ideas and have more freedom in the academic part than we usually do. I would have liked to complete the academic part before the actual work in terms of business in the Hub. Getting all the literature in place beforehand might have eased the process. Apart from that the structure was quite clear.”

Make it happen – or not
Asbjørn would have liked to know more about the academic frame and requirements before starting his Project in Practice, he says, but he got into a good routine of writing ‘to do’-lists for himself and log his own performance and progress throughout the project. Both Till and Asbjørn describes it as a great advantage to have done a Project in Practice through SCIENCE Innovation Hub before e.g. taking a course in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. It gave them a head start to the course and allowed them to dig deeper into business development.

“Project in Practice through SCIENCE Innovation Hub gives you the opportunity to try out your idea and make it happen - or not. You get to learn the process before going out in ‘the real world’,” Asbjørn Nørlund states.

When asked if the two would recommend doing a ‘Project in Practice in your own idea’ to others, they both reply with a big: “YES!”
